Omegacoaster

Early Nov I started a new job. My first real science job. As you can imagine I was buzzing that I was going to work for the medical device manufacturing company Omega making Covid tests and contributing to the global fight against Covid-19. My first impression where good. Its out in Alva so the drive is lovely, the people were nice and the company had general good vibes. My department was small with only 3 scientists who were also fairly new and 2 seniors. Training started of slow only been in the lab a handful of times over my first few weeks. One thing I did notice was that any training I did have in the lab was never recorded which I found very strange. Anyway as a weeks went on more and more staff started to join and it became clear that the company was expanding to accommodate manufacturing of the new covid tests. This is when the real issues started. Each time a new scientist started the seniors who were meant to be training us spent more time in the office swamped with paperwork and less time in the lab. This led to the 3 fairly new scientists been expected to train us with what little knowledge they had. Fast-forward 4 months an there is now 15 scientists and counting. I honestly cant believe that a company like this thought they could expand and employed all these new staff with no means of training them. Everyday in this place is like an emotional roller-coaster, people are stressed, frustrated and fed up. It doesn’t matter how many times we express our concerns about training we are not taken seriously. And the announcement that we will have more new starts on Monday was enough for everyone. This has gone too far. Its time to make it official. Me been the outspoken one of the group I suggested we write a formal complaint and take it to HR. Everyone aggreged and we’ve been working on drafting something up listing the issues and requesting a meeting with HR and our manger. It was killing me seeing everyone’s frustration and morale dipping so low, I had to do something. I feel I have used my leadership skills here to hopefully find us a solutions to our problem. Will it work? Who knows, stay tuned…..
